Preservation Archive

The Cambodian Vintage Music Archive Project (CVMA) aims at preserving and promoting the original recordings of Cambodian’s “Golden Era” of music (circa 1955 -1975) and the artists involved in its creation.

CVMA works to digitally archive all recordings of classical and popular Cambodian music including the front/back covers and liner notes of albums and any relevant documentation including oral histories. This comprehensive preservation approach not only restores an artistic legacy from a bygone era but is crucial to providing the legal proof needed to grant copyright control to the artist’s surviving family (thereby securing their ability to receive royalty payments).

Since its formation, CVMA has worked closely with the families of Golden Era artists, music collectors and fans in Cambodia and abroad and has an established a network with various regional and international arts organizations. We have digitized hundreds of pre-1975 vinyl records along with the album covers and related documents from this era.

We have been the go-to source for providing the highest quality audio/visual resources from our archive for filmmakers, ethnomusicologists, researchers, and fans alike. Our work has been used in the award-winning films “Golden Slumbers” (2011) and “Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten” (2014).

We are self-taught and do our own high-fidelity digital transfers and audio restoration.

Some of the original record covers have been rescued after the genocide in 1979.
